Shimla, previously known as Simla until 1972, is the capital and largest city of the Himachal Pradesh state in northern India (English pronunciation: /ml/; Hindi pronunciation: [mla] (listen)). Shimla was founded as the British India summer capital in 1864. Following independence, the city was initially designated as the capital of East Punjab before being promoted to serve as Himachal Pradesh's capital. It is the principal center for the state's economy, culture, and educational system.

Earlier to 1815, when British soldiers seized control of the region, small hamlets were noted. The British were drawn by the climate to build the city among the Himalayan mountains' thick woods. Shimla, the capital during the summer, played home to a number of significant political gatherings, such as the Simla Conference in 1945 and the Simla Accord in 1914. In 1948, upon independence, 28 princely republics were combined to form the state of Himachal Pradesh. The city continued to be a significant political hub even after independence, serving as the site of the Simla Agreement in 1972. The Mahasu district was renamed Shimla once the state of Himachal Pradesh was reorganized.

Numerous churches and temples, as well as some Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic-styled structures from the colonial era, can be found in Shimla. Tourists are drawn to the city's natural beauty, cathedrals, and temples built during the colonial era. The Shri Hanuman Jakhu (Statue), Jakhu Temple, Viceregal Lodge, Christ Church, Mall Road, The Ridge, and Annadale are a few of the city center's top attractions. Jakhoo, Annadale, Sanjauli, and Chotta Shimla are the northernmost and southernmost points, respectively, of the city centre. Chotta Shimla is the westernmost point.

Another popular tourist destination is the British-built Kalka-Shimla Railway line, which is included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shimla holds the MTB Himalaya mountain biking race, which debuted in 2005 and is considered the largest competition of its sort in South Asia due to the region's high terrain. The largest natural ice rink in South Asia is located in Shimla. The city is a destination for tourism as well as education, housing several colleges and research facilities.
